Our large Black Mystery Snails are elegantly beautiful, but they also serve as effective fish tank clearers! These prime aquarium snails consume uneaten fish food and clear off glass, aquatic plants, and aquarium decorations; plus they filter substrate to keep it the correct color. These peaceful invertebrates grow large as adults, reaching up to 3 inches in diameter, and are safe with any nonaggressive fish, live shrimp, and other aquarium animals, and they are also safe for a plant aquarium. Black Mystery Snails commonly have black shells with tan stripes, dark purple shells with gray stripes, or black shells with purple stripes (the rarest). Compared to other freshwater snails, Mystery Snails are characteristically more active and can often be found playing over an aquarium airstone, extending their antennae in search of food, and climbing up the aquarium pump to the water line to breathe oxygen. Because of this, ensure the water line in your aquarium is low enough or keep an aquarium cover in place so your snails cannot escape. We often ship smaller (.25 to 1.5 inches) snails so you can enjoy them longer and watch them grow. A young Mystery Snail can double in size over the course of two weeks to months. Basic aquarium attachments are required, such as a fish filter system (e.g. UV canister filter). NOTE: Contrary to popular belief, Mystery Snails are NOT the same species as Apple Snails. Apple Snails are an illegal species to own in the United States.
